Past events 2021

Kick starting the year on Wednesday 19 January is the erudite and talented plantsman Aaron Bertelsen. Formerly of Great Dixter, the world renowned Kent garden of Christopher Lloyd, Aaron will be taking us through growing a wide range of fruit and vegetables in pots – ideal for Windsor residents. He will be highlighting the best varieties to choose, pots and compost to grow in and ensure tasty crops make it into the kitchen and onto the plate.  

The event will take place at The York Club, Windsor Great Park, SL4 2HT (see map below). Doors open at 7pm and the talk will start at 7:30pm. Free to members and £5 for guests on the door. Drinks will be available from the bar and Aaron will be bringing some of his books for sale. For more details of his work please visit

In Conversation with David Emanuel, Vice President RWRHS

An entertaining evening with one of the world’s most famous fashion designers. As well as co-designing the iconic wedding gown of The Lady Diana Spencer he has dressed the likes of Joan Collins, Dame Shirley Bassey, Madonna and Ivana Trump. Recently he advised the award-winning television series The Crown on the reproduction of the iconic wedding gown.

In conversation with Sunita Shroff we will learn about David’s fascinating life and the people with which he has shared it. With his introduction to the world’s media, on the announcement by Buckingham Palace that he was to co-design the iconic wedding gown of The Lady Diana Spencer, David Emanuel became a global name.

Joe Swift & Modular in association with Butterworth Horticulture

Joe Swift spoke about his design for the Horatio’s Garden at the spinal unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital Spinal Unit exploring the connection between horticulture, health, and recovery. The awkward sloping, inaccessible site was transformed into a wheelchair friendly haven where patients spend important time engaging family and friends.

Michael Lewis-Anderson – Cake Designer

British-Belgium ‘Cake-King’, Michael Lewis-Anderson, kindly offered to hold our first online event of 2021. Some of you may remember him from the Royal Windsor Summer Show in 2019 when he presented his re-creation of  Victoria & Albert’s wedding cake.

Mark Tilling’s Home-made Christmas Chocolates

Non other than BBC Two’’s ‘Bake Off Creme De La Creme’ winner 2016 and former UK Chocolate Master Mark Tilling got everyone excited about Christmas when he showed how to temper chocolate without any sophisticated pastry gadgets, using readily available ingredients and turn them into the most wonderful chocolatey delights for friends and family at Christmas.

Donation request: Mark is a long-standing friend and supporter of the Royal Windsor Rose & Horticultural Society and he is donating his time to support our community and members with this free event. West Dean Walled Kitchen Gardens by Sarah Wain

If you missed the webinar by Sarah Wain in September, you can watch a recording of the talk on our You Tube Channel.

Sarah Wain who worked at West Dean Gardens for 30 years will be talking about the Walled Kitchen Garden and Glasshouses which she, her husband Jim Buckland and their team restored in the 1990’s in a classic Victorian Design. It now heaves with fruit, vegetables and cutting flowers.
