Beyond the Garden Gate: The National Garden Scheme, Past & Present

  • Wednesday, 14 May 2025
  • The York Club
  • Doors open at 7:00 PM, talk starts at 7:30 PM

Join us for a fascinating evening with Heather Skinner, as she takes us ‘beyond the garden gate’ to explore the story behind the National Garden Scheme (NGS) and its famous ‘Yellow Book’. Since its founding in 1927, the NGS has opened the gates to over 3,300 private gardens across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands, raising over £74 million for nursing and health charities including Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie and Hospice UK. The scheme also funds community garden projects, supports horticultural training and promotes the health and wellbeing benefits of gardens.

About the Talk

Heather will take us through the evolution of the NGS, from its early days supporting district nurses to its role today as the UK’s largest charitable funder of nursing. She will share first-hand insights into some of the stunning gardens in our area that will be open to visit in 2025, as well as the stories behind the dedicated garden owners who open their gates for charity.
